Group classes are brilliant for some dogs. If you've got a fairly settled dog who needs to learn the basics in a sociable environment, they can be great.
But if your dog is reactive, anxious, or has specific behavioural issues — a group class can actually make things worse.
They're nervous. They don't cope well around other dogs. And you've just walked them into a village hall with ten other dogs all in the same room. Before the session has even started, your dog is already over threshold — their brain is in survival mode and they're not learning a single thing.
The trainer isn't doing anything wrong. It's just the wrong environment for that dog.
Dogs with reactivity, fear, or specific behaviour problems need one to one work. They need someone who can focus entirely on them, read their body language, and adjust the training in real time based on how they're responding. That's not possible in a group setting.
If you've been to classes and come away thinking your dog is impossible or that training just doesn't work for them, please don't give up on them. They might just need a different approach.
I work one to one with dogs across Braintree in Essex and throughout Suffolk, including the Needham Market and Ipswich areas. If group classes haven't cut it, get in touch and let's talk about what will.
