Loose Lead Walking

Why Your Dog Pulls on the Lead (And What to Actually Do About It)

April 20265 min readBy Josh Brand

If your dog drags you down the street like you're attached to a freight train, here's the honest truth. It's not because they're a bad dog. It's because nobody ever showed them how to walk on a lead properly.

That's it. That's the whole reason.

Dogs pull because pulling works. Every time they lunge forward and you follow, they've just learned that pulling gets them where they want to go. So they do it again. And again. And again. You've accidentally trained them to do the exact thing that's driving you mad.

So how do you fix it?

You go back to basics. Completely.

Think about it like this. If you wanted to run a marathon, you wouldn't rock up on day one and try to smash 26 miles. You'd run down the street first. Get that right. Then build from there.

Same thing with your dog.

Start in the garden. Zero distractions. Just you, your dog, and a lead. Get the lead work perfect there before you go anywhere else. Then move to a quiet street. Get it perfect there. Then slowly, gradually, level up over time.

The mistake most people make is expecting their dog to walk perfectly past other dogs, bikes, kids and traffic when they haven't even nailed it in the back garden yet. That's not fair on the dog and it's why you're still struggling six months in.

The other thing? Stop allowing the pulling to happen. The second that lead goes tight, stop. Change direction. Make pulling completely pointless. Be consistent about it every single time, because if you let it slide once, you've just told your dog that sometimes it works and dogs are very good at sometimes.
